Nancy Berlow, Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Return to Zero: Hope Provider Spotlight

Tell us a little about the work that you do
I have been providing support to parents who have experienced perinatal losses for over 30 years. Initially I was the president of the Long Island chapter of Resolve educating and supporting women and couples experiencing infertility. I then worked for 15 years as the social worker at a large hospital where I coordinated a pregnancy and infant loss bereavement support program. Currently I have a private practice based solely in perinatal loss. I am on all insurance panels as pregnancy loss impacts all socio-economic strata and everyone is entitled to get support. I am also the clinical supervisor of the Pregnancy Loss Support Program that offers peer counseling support to bereaved parents.

Why are you passionate about serving the pregnancy and infant loss community?
I am acutely aware that the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Community's needs are under-recognized and under-served. Mental health and medical professionals need to learn the importance of giving support to women and couples who have had perinatal losses. I have given in-service trainings to social work staffs, OB teams and residents, and other medical workers whose work connects them to patients with losses.

How has RTZ impacted your work?
I have attended several RTZ webinars and I refer patients to the wide array of RTZ support services.

Return to Zero: Hope is a community of bereaved parents, families, and providers offering inclusive resources and holistic support for anyone whose life has been touched by loss, including infertility, secondary infertility, miscarriage, ending a wanted pregnancy, stillbirth, infant or toddler death, loss through surrogacy or failed adoption.

Provider interactions during pregnancy and infant loss have a lifelong impact on a family’s healing and wellbeing. RTZ Hope supports organizations and individuals who work with parents who have experienced perinatal loss, including hospitals, clinics, health providers, midwives, doulas, lactation consultants, mental health clinicians, peer advocates, and support organizations. We partner with health professionals to ensure they have the training, emotional support, and resources they need to confidently care for families at one of the most tragic moments of their journey towards parenthood.

This year alone, we've sent over $3000 in grief and loss material samples to health providers so they are more resourced and empowered to support bereaved families. Will you donate and help us continue to get these resources into the hands of those that need them?
