Milk Donation after Loss: A Legacy of Love

With Stephanie Lehman and Summer Kelly

About this webinar

The option to donate milk is an often-overlooked aspect of perinatal bereavement care. Yet, mothers and families report great meaning in honoring their baby's legacy through bereavement milk donation. During this presentation, attendees will learn how non-profit milk banks support families through bereavement donation. Summer and Stephanie will share information about their milk bank bereavement programs, research on this topic, and family stories, with the hope to motivate providers to offer milk donation as a choice after perinatal loss.

Meet Stephanie Lehman, PhD

Stephanie Lehman received her B.A. in Psychology from UCLA and her doctorate in Family Studies and Human Development from the University of Arizona. Stephanie started her career in the field of HIV prevention at the UCSD Mother, Child & Adolescent HIV Program. Upon delivering her daughter at 27 weeks gestation, weighing just over 1lb, Stephanie met the Founder and Medical Director of the UC Health Milk Bank. Stephanie later worked to help develop the Supporting Premature Infant Nutrition Program (SPIN) program at UCSD Health with a focus on premature infant family support and infant nutrition. She now currently heads the donor program for the UC Health Milk Bank, with a strong focus on donor education, outreach, and stewardship. Stephanie’s expertise has expanded to perinatal loss and lactation as a means of healing and she created the Cherry Blossom Family Bereavement program at the UC Health Milk Bank to support grieving families.

Meet Summer Kelly, MS, RN, IBCLC
