HOPE Beyond Loss: Fostering Positive Experiences in Perinatal Care

Hosted by the Blue Shift Project of Yuba–Sutter Counties
May 29, 2025

Last week, the Blue Shift Project of Yuba–Sutter brought together clinical providers, family support professionals, and community advocates for the Perinatal Mental Health Conference: HOPE Beyond Loss—a day dedicated to compassionate, trauma-informed care for families navigating pregnancy and infant loss.

Dr. Kiley Hanish, founder of Return to Zero: HOPE, led a powerful training on perinatal loss and pregnancy after loss. Her session highlighted best practices for supporting grieving families, addressing emotional needs with sensitivity, and strengthening provider confidence in caring for both parents—especially fathers and partners, whose grief is often overlooked.

The conference also featured:
• A parent panel sharing lived experiences of loss, resilience, and healing
• A resource fair with local organizations offering tools, referrals, and community-based support
• Practical strategies for providers on offering emotional care, coordinating resources, and fostering hope after loss

Attendees included nurses, clinical providers, home visitors, doulas, family support professionals, behavioral health teams, and advocates, all united in their commitment to improving the perinatal experience across Yuba–Sutter.

We are grateful for the invitation to contribute to such an intentional and meaningful gathering. Together, we move toward a future where all families, especially those who face unimaginable loss, receive the compassionate care they deserve.
